Vicar Aaron and his classmates visited and met with spiritual leaders from a Thai Buddhist Temple, Sikh Gurdwara, and Hindu Temple in Fremont, California.
The Buddhist Ajan spoke openly about interfaith and community life, including he and his fellow monk’s life of celibacy and complete reliance on their community for all needs. The image shows the group in front of a picture honoring the late Queen of Thailand.
At the Gurdwara, a Singh led everyone through all parts of the continually active worship center, including sharing a sacred vegetarian meal offered to any who come 24/7. Lastly, the Vedic Temple was alive with multiple simultaneous ceremonies focusing on Kali who embodies the feminine, Vishnu who creates, and Ganesha who brings luck and fortune. Interestingly, Shiva, who represents the destruction required for new life, was kept outside of the building.
Just like Christian denominations may or may not have all the traditions of all churches, Vishnu and Shiva have two very distinct denominations and regions of India. All three were very welcoming and happy to answer endless questions.
If you are in Fremont I recommend giving them a visit.
